Adams was ordained and installed Pastor of the Congregational Church in Brighton (now a part of Boston) on Feb. 2, 1831, but resigned three years later due to the illness and later death of his first wife. He was installed Pastor of the Central Presbyterian Church, Broome Street, New York, on Nov. 13 1834. In 1836 Adams was one of the group who founded Union Theological Seminary. Having declined in 1840 and 1871 offers of the presidency of Union Theological Seminary, he accepted the position in 1874. Adams was influential in securing large endowments for the Seminary, and the strength and independence of the institution were largely the result of his work. John Crosby Brown (1838 - 1909) in 1864, married Miss Mary Elizabeth Adams, daughter of William Adams. Mr. Brown was the son of James Brown, who in 1825 started the New York banking house of Brown Brothers and Co. He graduated from Columbia in 1859 and soon after entered his father's firm, of which, at the time of his death, he was senior partner. Crosby Brown received his early business training in the offices of Brown, Shipley and Co., of London, a branch house established by his uncle William Brown. He remained active in the affairs of this firm until his death. For many years Crosby Brown was an elder in the Madison Square Presbyterian Church, of New York. He was one of the founders of the Presbyterian Church at St. Cloud, New Jersey, where he was superintendent of the Sunday School. He became a director of the Union Theological Seminary in 1866, vice president of the board of directors in 1883, and upon the death of Dr. Charles Butler in 1897, was made its president. Rev. Dr. William Adams Brown (1865 - 1943) was John Crosby Brown's eldest son. William Adams Brown attended St. Paul's school, Concord, N.H., and received from Yale University an A.B. degree in 1886, an A.M. degree in 1888 and a Ph.D. in 1901. He graduated from the Union Theological Seminary in 1890, and studied at the University of Berlin from 1890 to 1892. He was ordained to the Presbyterian Ministry in 1893 and became an instructor at Union Theological Seminary in 1892, a provisional professor in 1895, Roosevelt Professor of Systematic Theology in 1898, and Research Professor in Applied Theology in 1930. A member of the Yale Corporation from 1917 to 1934, Adams Brown was acting president of Yale University from 1919 to 1920. He was president of the Religious Education Association from 1928 to 1931, a member of the Board of Home Missions of the Presbyterian Church from 1910 to 1923, and a member of the Commission of Higher Education, India, 1930-1931. In 1936 William Adams Brown retired from the faculty of Union Theological Seminary, after serving forty-four years. CONTENTS The Brown - Gilman Family Papers consist primarily of correspondence, 1862-1937, written by five generations of the Adams-Brown and Gilman-Noyes families. The organization of the letters revolves around William Adams Brown who corresponded often, beginning as a small child while away at school, with most of his relatives. Although William Adams Brown, his father and grandfather were very active professionals, the correspondence is personal and domestic rather than organizational. Also included are invitations and Christmas cards received by family; an address before students of Union Theological Seminary by John Crosby Brown in 1898 and obituary notices and family reminiscences of John Crosby Brown. Collection ends with four volumes of memorials of Rev. Dr. William Adams. The first volume consists of a series of letters and testimonials from students and colleagues of Dr. Adams during the seven years in which he was president of Union Theological Seminary. The other three volumes, containing a series of papers showing the more intimate sides of Dr. Adams' character, were specially prepared for the benefit of his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
