Born in Cunmington, Massachusetts, Bryant practised law from 1815-1826. During this time he established his literary reputation with the publication of "Thanatopsis" and other poems and essays in the North American Review. He accepted the position of assistant editor of the Evening Post in 1826, replaced William Coleman as editor in 1829, and remained at that post until his death in 1878, Under his leadership, the newspaper developed a reputation for high culture, dignity, and moral idealism and maintained a strong abolitionist stance. He helped found the Republican Party, was instrumental in the creation of New York City's Central Park, and was nationally respected figure in both literature and public affairs. Parke Godwin (1816-1904) was a lawyer of Paterson, New Jersey and a close associate of William Cullen Bryant. He met Bryant in 1836, joined the staff of the Evening Post the following year, and married the poet's daughter, Fanny, in 1842, Although connected with the Evening Post until 1881, differences with its policies led Godwin to help found and edit several other journals including the Harbinger(a Fourierist journal) The Pathfinder, Putnam's Monthly Magazine, and the Commercial Advertiser. In addition to two volumes of his political and literary essays, Godwin published a Hand-Book of Universal Biography (1852), a History of France (1860), a Biography of William Cullen Bryant (1883) and a multi-volume edition of his works (1883-84), and a New Study of the Sonnets of Shakespeare (1900). Like his father-in-law, he was a prominent New Yorker and popular public speaker. The Bryant-Godwin Papers an amalgamation of three previously separate collections (Bryant-Godwin Collection, Goddard-Roslyn Collection, Bryant Personal Miscellaneous Papers) dealing with the poet and newspaper editor, William Cullen Bryant, and his colleague and son-in-law, Parke Godwin. The collection contains Bryant's letters, 1814-1878, Godwin's letters, 1840-1898, and an extensive collection of letters written to them by family members, friends, colleagues, and prominent persons in the fields of literature, the arts, science, politics, philanthropy, and religion during the 19th century. There are both personal letters and letters written to the men in their capacity as editors and writers for the New York Evening Post. There are also a significant number of letters written to their wives and daughters as well. A complete list of correspondents is attached. Among them are Charles Francis Adams, George Bancroft, John Bigelow, Edwin Booth, Salmon P. Chase, Lydia Maria Child, George W. Curtis, Charles A. and Richard H. Dana, James T. Fields, Henry James, Sr., Henry W. Longfellow, and Robert Cassie Waterston. In addition to correspondence the collection contains manuscript drafts, fair copies, and notes for addresses, essays, poetry, and dramatic works by Bryant and Godwin. Bryant's personal papers in the collection include notebooks and account books from his early studies and legal practice, 1818-1825; travel diaries, passports, and travel expense books, 1835-1866; personal financial and legal records, 1809-1874; financial and legal records regarding the Evening Post, 1836-1861; and various notebooks relating to agriculture and gardening, a diary kept by Mrs. Fanny Bryant (?), 1866, and household notes;***** recipes*****.
