AND MARY STILLMAN HARKNESS MANUSCRIPT COLLECTION The Harkness Collection consists of autograph letters, documents, and signatures, chiefly of eighteenth through twentieth century British and American literary and historical figures. European figures and artistic and musical figures are also represented in the collection, some by items dating back to the fifteenth century. The items are usually mounted in volumes and accompanied by typed transcripts, portrait photographs and illustrations, and related letters, clippings, and other material. Charles Dickens; Benjamin Franklin; Marie-Louise, Empress of France; Mary Stuart; Edgar Allen Poe; John Ruskin; William Makepeace Thackeray; Henry David Thoreau; George Washington; and John Greenleaf Whittier are among the figures represented. Two Revolutionary War era letters by Washington, containing instructions to his subordinates. 1. Headquarters, Pompton Plains, July 12, 1777, to Major General Sullivan. Written by General Cobb and signed by Washington. 2. Headquarters, December 21, 1777, to Major Clark. The first is accompanied by a letter, dated London, March 20, 1854, from Mr. [James] Buchanan (unsigned) to Lady Clarendon presenting her with the Washington letter. Also included in the volume are cut signatures of John Quincy Adams; James Monroe; J.A. Bayard, H. Clay, and Albert Gallatin, American commissioners at Ghent, 1814; and Charles Carroll of Carrollton, only surviving signer, in 1828, of the Declaration of Independence. 24. Whittier, John Greenleaf. A charming pen and ink drawing together with ten lines written by Thackeray about himself and his tract "The Three English Sailors"; together with an envelope addressed to Shirley Brooks. 6 An autograph fragment of ten lines of the MS concerning "Caroline". Two pen and ink drawings to which Shirley Brooke has written "Done at the 'Punch' Table". 7 Richard Monckton Millnes; First Baron Houghton. A graduate of Trinity College, Cambridge and a friend of Tennyson and Thackeray. Baron Houghton visited the United States in 1875. Walter Savage Landor, author of "Imaginary Conversation" and other writings; thanking Brooks for a favorable review. 8 John Leech, two very friendly letters, each commencing "My dear Shirley". 9 An original pencil sketch, probably for one of the drawings that appeared in "PUNCH", and in the lower right hand corner of the page is a clover pen and ink photo sketch of John Foster, also is a short note addressed to Brooks. 10 Douglas Jerrold. Part of an autograph Ms of an article contributed to "PUNCH". 11 Douglas Jerrold. Two A.L.S. letters and one from Miss Jerrold. Very amusing and charming letters in which Douglas Jerrold and his daughter thank Brooks for the present of the 'Beautiful Cat'. 13 Sidney Herbert. First Baron Herbert of Lea. Letter of introduction to Prince Woronzow, also another A.L.S. of Herbert. 14-15 A most interesting historical document, for instance 1624 about which Brooks has written the account of finding it, etc. 19 Laman Blanchard. A friend of Douglas Jerrold's and Editor of George Cruikshank's magazine. Two very friendly letters addressed to Brooks. 20-21 Three most interesting A.L.S. of Charles Dickens, characteristic in style of writing and signature and signed in full 'Charles Dickens' with the flourish under the signature and each letter written in the well-known 'Violet Ink'. Especially sweet is the letter on page 20 which as Brooks has annitated was the last letter written to him by Dickens, shortly before his death. 23 Two letters of David Roberts, artist, he was the painter of the wonderful pictures reproduced in the folio set entitled 'Robert's Holy Land'. These letters thank Brooks for a review of his paintings that appeared in "PUNCH". 25 An original Ms poem by Harrison Ainsworth "The Dirge of Burbon". A.L.S. from Annie Thomas, authoress, 26 John Phillip, artist on the "Punch" staff and great friend of Brooks. 27 Martin F. Tupper, author of "Proverbial Philosophy" and contributor to "Punch". Dr. John Percy (inventor) an original joke written for "Punch" "by" Dr. Percy with the printed clipping pasted at the bottom of the original. 28 John Douglas Cook, Editor of "The-Morning Chronicle". A friendly letter asking Brooks to call. 29 John Wilson Croker, Editor of "Boswell's Life of Johnson". Leigh Hunt assayist and poet. 30-31 Angus B. Reach, Scottish author and Journalist, joined the "Punch" staff in 1839. 32-33 Judge Talfourd, a friend of Charles Lamb and William Wordsworth. Author of "Memorials of Lamb" 35 Augustus Egg, painter. Michael Faraday, great electrician and inventor of the electric magnet. 37 Samuel Wilberforce, Bishop of Oxford. 39 Albert Smith, 3 ALS, one containing a small photograph of a drawing made by Thackeray and sent to him. This clever sketch by Thackeray represents his magazine "The Cornhill" putting all the other little Magazines to flight. 40-41 John Teniel, the famous illustrator of "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland". Three autograph notes and a humorous sketch representing one of Shirley Brooks ancestors in armour. 42 Germard Reed, a famous musician and one of the first to give chamber concerts in London. 43 Charles Matthews, the actor, an amusing note charging Brooks for not coming to his theatre. Joined the "Punch" staff at its start at 1841 45 Charles Reade, a friendly letter from this famous English writer. 49 A most friendly letter from Robert Browning 51 W. H. Russell, written by him from Odessa from the Crimean War; discusses American troubles which were looking so serious at that time (1846) also a most amusing note. 53 Charles II. The document signed by him while in exile 1659. 54-55 Henry Drummond (1786-1860) BNT politician & general writer Two ALS notes and the newspaper article of appreciation written by Shirley Brooks at the time of Drummond's death. 59 Emma Homer, the famous singer at Covent Garden. Catherine Crowe, authoress, author of "Ghosts and Family Legions". 60 Robert Carruthers editor of Pope's works. A friendly letter to Brooks in which he makes the prediction that the addition of Artemus Ward to the "Punch" staff would be no gain 61 George Herdeith. Goldwin Smith, English writer and teacher, visited America in 1864 and from '68 to 71 was professor of History at Cornell University. J.G. Dodson, an autograph note contradicting the notice in "Punch" that he was the author of "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland"...."I have no claim to that honour. I wish I had. C. L. Dodgson, an A.L.S. note to Tenniel asking him "to make no further allusions to the name of the author 'Alice' " 112 Linley Sambourne, original pen and ink drawing by one of Punch's most popular artists. 112-113 Francis Cowley Burnand, life-long friend of Brooks was with Punch for years and became Chief Editor in 1874. The letters are illustrated with some original drawings. 114-115 Charles Keene, the original pen and ink sketch used for the heading of "Punch" Vol.61. A.L.S. with 2 pen and ink sketches in the text. The original pen and ink sketch for a humorous fishing incident used in "Punch". The original pen and ink sketch for the cartoon of the American Civil War depicting Abraham Lincoln a dressed up negro and a wounded soldier. These are being received by "Punch". Deutsch, Semitic scholar and associated with the British Museum from 1855 to 1870. A most amusing note. Thomas Henry Huxley, famous scientist. 127 Rev. Charles Haddon Spurgeon, famous preacher. He had built for him the Metropolitan Tabernacle holding over 6,000 people, in 1861. 128-129 George duMaurier, An original pen and ink sketch depicting Shirley Brooks and others in a medieval tournament. Inscription at foor "Ha! Plantagenet. A Shirley to the rescue !" An original pen and ink sketch of the meeting of the Editor and staff roudn the 'Punch' table under which duMaurier has written "Settling the big cut-Sept. 1, 1869. The original pen and ink sketch of Shirley Brooks inter-viewing duMaurier and arranging the details of the latter's illustrations of "Sooner or Later". With long humorous inscription at foot in duMaurier's hand-writing. Franklin's letter to Walpole, Returned to the writer at his request, and which, Franklin says, "I now attach with a wafer to this paper."
