Maloney, a neurologist of New York City, who was born in Scotland, served in the British Army during World War I and later became active in Irish affairs, and his wife, Margaret McKim Maloney, the daughter of the prominent New York architect, Charles Follen McKim, and the grand-daughter of the abolitionist, James Miller McKim. There are also a few scattered items given by other donors. The IHP is one part, and the Maloney Collection of McKim-Garrison Family Papers is the other, of a two-part super-collection called The William J. Maloney and Margaret McKim Maloney Collections of Historical Papers. The two parts are organically unrelated and linked only by their common donors and as an administrative convenience. They have separate catalog cards and inventories, and are stored apart from each other. SCOPE AND CONTENT OF THE MALONEY COLLECTION OF IRISH HISTORICAL PAPERS The IHP spans the years from the formation of the Fenian Brotherhood in 1858 up to the proclamation of the Republic in 1949. The collection vividly reflects an historical epoch during which, in spite of being an impoverished, pastoral, and subject people, the Irish managed to thrust themselves on the attention of the world. The letters and papers document the gradual development in Ireland of an ideology of nationalism which sought, on the one hand, through land, penal, and parliamentary reforms to ameliorate the plight of the landless peasants and urban poor, and, on the other, to first reduce the power of the old plantation Ascendency leadership and eventually replace it with a new alliance and hegemony of the predominantly Protestant Anglo-Irish and Catholic Irish upper-middle classes. Relative successes in these areas strengthened the nationalist cause and paved the way for the struggle for Home Rule. Among the crucial events of modern Irish history which are also chronicled are the 1916 Rising and in its wake the reprisals by the British which created a backlash of sympathy and solidarity in the south; and, following its success at the polls in 1918, the efforts of Sinn Fein to create a strong government inexorably opposed to any binding relationship to Great Britain or the Commonwealth; and the ramifications of the Government of Ireland Act of 1920 which, by dividing Ireland into two nations, each having its own parliament and representatives in the British parliament, protected British economic interests and assured their continued rule in the heavily industrialized predominantly Protestant and loyalist north-eastern counties. Early in 1921 this Act was accepted in the north and rejected by the Sinn Fein majority in the southern Dail. There followed the brief but harrowing Anglo-Irish War which ended with the treaty signed in December 1921. This treaty legitimatized the partition and reinforced Ulster's sense of ethnic, religious, and socio-political isolation from the twenty six counties of the south which had been established by the treaty as a Free State with dominion status in the British Commonwealth. In effect the treaty split the Irish Free State also into two opposing factions: those who supported the treaty (few of whom gave it their whole-hearted support but were prepared to defend it, and none of whom was happy with the partition), and the staunch hard-line republicans led by De Valera who were committed to a policy of complete independence from Britain and the reunification of Ireland. From these events and the civil war that followed them were developed the political parties and issues which shaped the nation's cultural and politcal consciousness and which, to a large and crucial degree, to this day still reflect the bitter ideological quarrels of the period. The collection includes the correspondence and papers of Sir Roger Casement, who was tried and executed for treason by the British in 1916. These deal principally with Casement's experiences in Ireland and the U.S. as spokesman for Irish independence, and his work in Germany to raise money and obtain arms for the Irish Volunteers and the 1916 Rising. They also document the creation in Germany of an Irish Brigade to fight against the British. There are also the correspondence and papers, 1857-1904, of Jeremiah O'Donovan Rossa, consisting chiefly of letters of O'Donovan Rossa, John O'Mahoney, James Stephens, and others, relating to the history, 1857-1876 of the Irish Revolutionary Brotherhood and its American counter-part, the Fenian Brotherhood. This section also contains Rossa's notes on correspondents and events. Other import groups are the papers and correspondence, 1911-1937, of Joseph McGarrity, which deal with his activities as a leader in the U.S. of the Irish Republican movement, chairman of the Irish Revolutionary Directory, Chairman of Clan-na-Gael, and founder of 'The Irish Press'; letters and papers of the Joint Committee on the Immigration Act of 1924,which was composed of the American Irish Historical Society, Friends of Irish Freedom, Clan-na-Gael, and the Ancient Order of Hibernians, and which advocated the repeal of the national origins clauses of that Act; letters and papers, 1915-1948, of Patrick McCartan, the Ambassador to the U.S. in 1918 and the Envoy to the Soviet Union, of the Provisional Government of the Republic of Ireland; letters to David James O'Donoghue, scholar and editor, mainly relating to his book, 'The Poets of Ireland'; the correspondence of The Friends of Irish Freedom, 1919-1922, which deal principally with the Irish bond certificate campaign; the letters and papers of Dr. William J.
