DON CARLOS SEITZ - BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE Don Carlos Seitz, (1862 - 1935), well known journalist, was the son of Rev. Josiah Augustus Seitz, a Universalist minister, and Rebecca J. Brown Seitz. Seitz was born in Portage, Ohio, but received his early education in Maine, where he graduated from the Liberal Institute, Norway, Maine, in 1880. He received a Masters Degree from St. Lawrence University in 1906 and was awarded a Doctorate of Letters from Bowdoin College in 1921. After college, Seitz started newspaper work on the Brooklyn Eagle. From 1887 - 1889, he was Albany correspondent for the Eagle, and then became its city editor, serving until 1891. The next two years he was assistant publisher of the New York Recorder and then joined the staff of the New York World. Joseph Pulitzer, owner of the New York World, first made him managing editor of the Brooklyn World; next, placed him in the advertising department of the New York World, of which he soon became manager. In 1898 he was promoted to business manager, a position he held for twenty-five years, during the newspaper's most properous period. After Pulitzer's death, his sons took over publishing the newspapers. Seitz continued three more years as manager of the Evening World. In 1926 he left daily journalism and joined the staff of the magazine Outlook, where he served for one year as associate editor. Seitz' final editorship was at the staff of the Churchman from 1929 to 1932. In addition to his editorial career, Seitz was a prolific author. Among many others, his publications include: Writings By and About James Abbott McNeill Whistler, 1910; Training For The Newspaper Trade, 1916; In Praise of War, 1917; Braxton Bragg - General Of The Confederacy, 1924; Joseph Pulitzer, His Life and Letters, 1924; and Lincoln The Politician, 1931. He also contributed many articles to magazines. On April 15, 1890, Seitz married Mildred E. Blake, of East Deering, Maine, with whom he had two daughters: Mildred and Mabel. He died of heart disease at his home in Brooklyn, New York, and was buried in Falmouth Foreside, near Portland, Maine. DON CARLOS SEITZ - PAPERS The papers of journalist Don Carlos Seitz consist of correspondence, 1882 - 1934. The letters are arranged alphabetically and are mostly incoming. His correspondents include political leaders, authors, publishers, editors and many other distinguished people in the literary world, among whom are: Josephus Daniels, Sr., Frank Nelson Doubleday, George Gary Eggleston, Henry Louis Mencken and Oswald Garrison Villard. Among the subjects discussed are: The New York World, Joseph Pulitzer and Seitz' books. The collection also contains two typescripts with corrections by Seitz: Uncommon Americans, 1925 and Famous American Duels, 1929.
