Her parents, members of the fundamentalist sect The Disciples of Christ, moved the family to the Islands to teach school there and do missionary work. Taggard attended local schools and Oahu College until financial assistance from friends enabled the family to move to Berkeley, California in 1914 so that Genevieve could enter the University of California. During her years there she edited the student literary magazine, Occident and began moving in the Socialist literary circles of San Francisco. In June 1920 she went to New York and quickly became part of the Greenwich Village radical bohemian literary scene, contributing poems to The Liberator and joining the publishing firm of B.W. Huebsch. In 1921 she helped Maxwell Anderson and Padraic Colum found the poetry magazine, Measure and married fellow writer Robert Wolf. The following year she gave birth to a daughter, Marcia, and published her first book of verse, For Eager Lovers. The book was praised by many critics including Edmund Wilson, but real recognition came only after the publication of her 1928 collection of poems, Travelling Standing Still. Among her other works are Hawaiin Hilltop (1923), May Days, an anthology of verse from the Massed and The Liberator (1925), Words for the Chisel (1926), Collected Poems: 1918-38 (1938) and Long View (1942). In addition to verse, Taggard published a biography of Emily Dickinson, The Life and Mind of Emily Dickinson (1930). She taught poetry at Mount Holyoke (1929-31), Bennington College (1932-35), and Sarah Lawrence (1934-46). Throughout her career Taggard remained closely associated with the Communist Party. She served as contributing editor to New Masses, on the executive council of the League of American Writers, and in 1935 married Kenneth Durant, director of the American bureau of the Soviet news agency, TASS. Her political views are expressed in poetry in Calling Western Union (1936) and Falcon (1942), the former about Vermont marble workers and the latter celerating the heroism of the Soviet people. The Tuggard Papers contain incoming and outgoing correspondence, research materials for and drafts of The Life and Mind of Emily Dickinson, drafts and manuscripts of other writings, teaching notes, subject files, and materials about Taggard collected by Kenneth Durant. The general correspondence, 1918-49, contains letters from many important figures in 20th century American literature, personal friends, family, and academic colleagues (see attached list). There is Among her most frequent correspondents are William Rose Benet, Mary Lapsley Caughey, Max Eastman, Sara Bard Field, Josephine Herbst, Rolfe Humphries, J.J. Lankes, George Sterling, and Louis Untermeyer. The correspondence is arranged alphabetically by the name of the writer. Taggard's letters are filed under the name of the recipient. Following the alphabetical sequence are letters from unidentified correspondents and a file of letters regarding Taggard's book, A Part Of Vermont (1945). Illustrated letters are present from William Rose Benet, Alexander Calder, and Walt Kuhn. Some of Taggard's correspondence with publishers, 1920-48, can be found arranged by the name of the publishing company or the publication in a separate series following the general correspondence (see attached list). Similar material can also be found in the general correspondence. Taggards papers on Emily Dickinson include correspondence regarding The Life and Mind of Emily Dickinson, 1928-44, with individuals, libraries, and archives, research materials collected in the preparation of the book (transcripts of important documents, copies of Dickinson's poems and letters, copious notes on the poet's life and work), teaching and lecture notes, notes for a revised edition of the book and a collection of Dickinson's work, and drafts, manuscripts, typescripts, and proofs of The Life and Mind of Emily Dickinson (1930). Aside from the biography, a few of Taggard's other prose and verse writings are present in the form of notes, drafts, manuscripts, booklets, broadsides, and sheet music. These writings are unarranged and often unidentified by title. Among these papers are a college notebook [1918?] and a journal [1920?]. Taggard's other papers include teaching notes on various writers, arranged alphabetically by the writer's name, and unarranged files on the League of American Writers, Young People's Record Club, manuscripts by other writers, literary works dedicated to Taggard, and many unidentified papers. Box 26 contains papers collected and created by Kenneth Durant while compiling a bibliography of Taggard's work and a chronology of her life. Included are the final bibliography (completed by Herbert Cahoon of NYPL), notes and drafts for the bibliography and chronology, biographical information and documents on Taggard's life, Durant's correspondence with Marcia Durant, Gladys LaFlamme Colburn, and various institutions soliciting information about her, and copies of her poems, particularly Aleatory Wind and Primavera, and notes regarding them. Most of the material is unarranged and unidentified and thus may contain Taggard's own notes and drafts of unpublished poetry. Finally, the collection contains a small number of photographs of Taggard and her friends, phonograph records and tape recordings of her reading her poetry, and microfilm copies of some letters and poems not in the collection.
